New reports of bear sightings today in Columbia County

Columbia County authorities are receiving new reports today of the wandering black bear that has toured the area since Monday.

Shortly before noon, two calls to emergency officials reported seeing the bear in the vicinity of Old Washington Road and Clanton Road.

Shortly after 11 a.m., callers to the Sheriff’s Office reported seeing the bear near Mitchell Lane, off Riverwood Parkway, said Pam Tucker, the county’s emergency services director.

The bear, which biologists say is a 2-year-old male wandering in search of new territory, should be left alone to continue its journey, she said.
