Man charged after vehicle collides with ambulance

An Augusta man has been charged in a crash with an ambulance early this morning that injured three people.

Lawson Landrum of the 3700 block of Winchester Trail was charged with failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle after colliding with a Gold Cross ambulance transporting a patient around 1 a.m. this morning, said Richmond County Sheriff’s Maj. Richard Weaver.

Mr. Landrum, in his mid-20s, was driving a Ford Explorer westbound on Central Avenue when he approached a green traffic light at Druid Park Avenue, Maj. Weaver said. He failed to stop when the emergency vehicle, displaying its emergency lights, was traveling southbound on Druid Park Avenue.

Mr. Landrum’s vehicle struck the driver side of the ambulance, Maj. Weaver said. Two emergency workers and the patient were transported to University Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics, but their injuries were minor, Maj. Weaver said.
