Two found dead in Augusta

Police believe a murder-suicide today in south Augusta was the result of an argument about unfinished remodeling work.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigators were called out to a home in the 3500 block of Redd Drive around noon where a man’s body was lying in the driveway, sheriff’s Lt. Scott Peebles said in a media release this evening.

The man, Frank Lee Walker, Jr., 44, had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After entering the home, investigators found the body of 53-year-old Donnie Lurth McKey in the bathroom. He had also suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and was transported to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police that Mr. McKey was arguing with Mr. Walker about work done on his home that had been paid for but not completed, Lt. Peebles said.

In the midst of the argument, Mr. McKey pulled out a gun and shot Mr. Walker in the forehead. Mr. McKey returned to the inside of his home and shot himself.

Mr. McKey’s girlfriend and a 12-year-old relative were present at the time of the shootings.

Family members told police that Mr. McKey has a history of depression and other mental issues.

An autopsy on the two men will be conducted at the Augusta Crime Lab at 8 a.m. Saturday.
