Youth of the Month: David Lawson Westerfield

David Lawson Westerfield makes the grade and makes a difference.

David, the valedictorian of the Class of 2009 at Cross Creek High School, is known for his enthusiasm for helping others.

He’s The Augusta Chronicle Community Counts Youth of the Month.

David has always helped others and worked to succeed , which put him at the top of his class, said his mother, Kathy.

“He has a lot of patience,” she said.

He participated in a mentoring program, working with special education students for four years.

“You learn more from them than they learn from you,” he said.

He helped one student get in shape with weightlifting.

“Growing up, I’ve loved sports and loved helping people,” David said.

He’s enrolled at the University of Georgia and will major in sports medicine. Attending UGA was a dream for David, who loves Bulldogs football and set a goal in middle school to attend the university.

His motivation comes from his family : his mother and father, David, and sister, Katie, he said.

“My mom and dad, they raised me real good,” he said.

He is also involved in his church, Miracle Baptist Church, where he can be found helping out anywhere from the kitchen to children’s programs.
