Wildwood Park to close two days to fix road

Columbia County’s Wildwood Park will be closed June 15-17 to allow contractors to begin work on a new roadway and park entrance that will open later this year, according to Park Coordinator Jeb Bell.

The 972-acre park, on land owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and leased to Columbia County, includes camping and day-use areas, along with a major multi-lane boat launch ramp and fishing tournament parking area along Thurmond Lake.

The road and entrance improvements are among the first steps in a proposed, long-range master plan that – over a period of many years – could include $21 million in cabins, new beaches, a “mega-playground,” welcome center, lodge and possibly even a waterfront amphitheater.

Financing for the entrance road improvements is already secured through local options sales tax funds. The current park entrance is near a blind hill and has caused traffic concerns, especially during major events.

The park is scheduled to re-open June 18, barring any unforeseen delays, Mr. Bell said.

Updated information about the park or this project will be available at www.columbiacountyga.gov.
