Columbia County planners OK zoning change for mosque

The Columbia County Planning Commission has rezoned less than an acre of property that will provide additional land for a future mosque planned off Old Evans Road in Martinez.

The Islamic Society of Augusta requested a rezoning for about a half acre of a 1.13-acre lot off Old Evans Road near Old Petersburg Road from single-family residential and townhouse residential to special use.

Planning commissioners passed the rezoning 4-0 Thursday night, which means the land will be combined with about eight acres owned by the Islamic Society and already zoned special use.

The Islamic Society, based in Martinez, has plans of constructing a 30,000-square-foot community center, including a 3,000-sqaure-foot prayer hall to be used daily for services, a multipurpose room for special events and 11 classrooms, used twice a week and housing administrative offices.
