'Buckle up' campaign under way

The Aiken Department of Public Safety’s Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic team announced that the statewide “Buckle Up South Carolina” Memorial Day 2009 campaign begins today and runs through May 31.

According to a press statement, officers will be making an extra effort to enforce safety belt and child restraint violations, as well as educate the public about the importance of their proper use.

So far this year, 312 people have died on South Carolina roadways. Of those killed, 247 had access to seatbelts (excludes motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, etc.), but 151 were not restrained. We encourage everyone to buckle up every time because seat belts save lives!
