Feds sentence Savannah doctor for dispensing drugs illegally

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Savannah area doctor has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for illegally dispensing prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs.

U.S. Attorney Edmund A. Booth Jr. said today that Hung Thien Ly also was fined $200,000 and must pay a special assessment of $12,900.

A federal jury convicted Dr. Ly on Aug. 14 of 129 counts of illegal dispensation of controlled substances. Booth says Dr. Ly dispensed drugs for no legitimate medical reason from his practice in a frame house in Pooler, Ga., after minimal physical exams and accepted only cash payment.

The prosecutor says Dr. Ly did not warn his patients that the drugs could be addictive and required them to return every 10 to 20 days for a new supply.
