Hearing tomorrow for mother and son in murder case

A second bond hearing and arraignment will be held Wednesday for a Columbia County mother and her son accused of murdering a Grovetown woman.

The 9 a.m. hearing for Rebecca Sears, 41, and Christopher Bowers, 20, will be held at the Columbia County Justice Center in Evans.

Authorities believe Mrs. Sears, of 227 Hot Springs Drive, Grovetown, and Mr. Bowers, of the 4000 block of Briarwood Drive, Martinez, fatally beat Laverne “Kay” Parsons, Mrs. Sears’ next-door neighbor, in her home on March 25.

During an April bond hearing, Superior Court Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet denied bond to Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers. However, he said at the time that they could try again following a preliminary hearing.

The preliminary hearing never took place because a Columbia County grand jury indicted the mother and son for murder beforehand.

Victor Hawk, Mrs. Sears’ attorney, has since said that he would petition the court again for bond during the arraignment.
