Elderly man was abducted; police look for suspect

Columbia County authorities released photos today of a suspected kidnapper who they say on Monday abducted an elderly West Virginia man at knifepoint.

James Clevenger, 75, of Morgantown, WV, told police he was accosted Monday afternoon by a Hispanic man in the parking lot of the Evans Kroger.

The assailant then stole Mr. Clevenger’s debit card, credit card and $190 in cash before forcing him into his own truck and driving away, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Once in the truck, Mr. Clevenger said, the man drove him to ATM machines.

The police report noted that Mr. Clevenger’s card was used twice – once for a $301 withdrawal from the CSRA Federal Credit Union on North Belair Road and again at Pollard’s Corner for a $202 withdrawal.

Following the transactions, Mr. Clevenger said the man drove him to Clanton Road in Evans, exited his vehicle and got into a black Ford 1-150 truck that was following them.

Anyone with information regarding this suspect should call the sheriff’s office at (706) 541-2800.
