Flu threat halts SC prison visits

With the number of probable H1N1 flu cases on the rise in South Carolina, inmate visitation at the state’s 28 correctional institutions has been cancelled until further notice, the Department of Corrections announced this afternoon.

In a media release, the agency said it made its decision to cancel visitation after consulting with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, which advised that limiting visitation could help protect inmates with weakened physical health and who are more susceptible to contracting the flu.

There are no suspected cases of H1N1 flu within the corrections system, prison officials said.
