Columbia County school budget to be discussed

The Columbia County school board will meet Tuesday morning to discuss next school year’s budget.

Held at 8 a.m. in the auditorium of the school board office on Hereford Farm Road in Evans, the budget study session is the first of many to be held by the board leading up to approving the 2009-10 budget, which currently is scheduled for June 23.

During a board meeting held last week, Superintendent Charles Nagle said this year was the first time his staff has devised a preliminary budget without knowing the expected revenues. He said he is still waiting to learn from the state how much they intend to contribute.

Mr. Nagle said the budget he intends to present to the board Tuesday is what will be needed to run the school system and that he hopes the state funds will match. If the funds don’t match officials’ expectations, they may have to cut $3-5 million.
