Grenade found in Aiken shed

AIKEN -- Authorities responded earlier today to a report of a grenade found in a shed behind a woman’s house in Aiken County, briefly closing some roads in the area.

Officials have since determined the device had already been exploded and posed no safety risk. Aiken County Sheriff’s Office officials and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded about 1:30 p.m. to the area of Burnett Street and Carline Street, near S.C. Highway 421. There had been a report of someone finding the grenade while cleaning out a shed in preparation for a garage sale.

The homeowner told authorities she knew about the grenade, but those helping her prepare for the sale didn’t and notified police. Authorities cleared the area by about 3:00 p.m., said sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell.
