AIKEN -- The Aiken County Board of Education will hold a special called meeting Tuesday for the first reading of a policy change that would allow uniform negotiations for retired teachers, according to school attorney Bill Burkhalter.
The policy updates the districts practice this year of offering retired teachers yearly contract only if a qualified and certified teacher on continuing contract is not available.
This year more than a dozen retirees were not offered returning contracts due to the districts budget deficit. Retirees are currently rehired at the last salary they held while on contract, which is usually costly for the school district.
The change in language would allow the school district to offer job to retirees, but at a lower salary established by the state that would be uniform for all retirees. Mr. Burkhalter said he did not know of any plans to negotiate contracts with retirees let go earlier in the year.
The school board will also be updated on the swine flu and district procedures in the event a pandemic is declared.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at 1000 Brookhaven Drive.
