Woman, son indicted in fatal beating

A Columbia County grand jury indicted today a Columbia County mother and son accused of killing a Grovetown woman.

Rebecca Sears, 41, and Christopher Bowers, 20, were indicted murder, armed robbery and burglary by the grand jury.

They are accused of fatally beating and stealing from 41-year-old Laverne “Kay” Parsons, Mrs. Sears’ next-door neighbor in the Orchard Hill subdivision off Columbia Road.

The indictment charges Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers with beating Mrs. Parsons to death with a bat and claw hammer.

During a bond hearing last week, Assistant District Attorney Philip Catalano called Mrs. Sears the “mastermind” behind the murder and said it was Mr. Bowers who fatally beat Mrs. Parsons with a claw hammer.

Victor Hawk, Mrs. Sears’ attorney, recently said that a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 29 for Mrs. Sears and Mr. Bowers likely would be cancelled should they be indicted. A phone message left Wednesday afternoon for Mr. Hawk was not immediately returned.
