Police say charges await mom who deserted 4-year-old child

Special
Allison Jontil Barnes

A Richmond County investigator says the mother of a 4-year-old found wandering the streets is on the run.

Investigator Grace Wittke said Allison Jontil Barnes, 24, of the 1900 block of Central Avenue was supposed to meet with deputies on Monday but never showed up.

Once detained, Ms. Barnes will be charged with deprivation of a minor after her child was discovered sitting on the side of the road and her apartment was discovered filled with filth.

A driver found Ms. Barnes’ daughter near their apartment on the shoulder of Central Avenue around 7:15 p.m. Monday, according to a sheriff’s report.

The driver contacted police, and officers began a door-to-door search for the child’s home. Officers located the apartment and found the home with no food in the refrigerator and the floor littered with food, dirty clothes and roaches, according to the report.

There was no one present at the home, and the back door was open. The child was released to her aunt.

Ms. Barnes is described as a black woman, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 230 pounds.

Anyone with information can contact Richmond County Criminal Investigations Department at (706) 821-1020.
