COLUMBIA -- People who buy a mobile home only to find themselves saddled with the previous owner's back taxes could be in for relief.
The South Carolina Senate Finance Committee passed S. 412, introduced by Sen. David Thomas, R-Greenville, which would allow county councils to waive the back taxes on purchases starting next year.
"The counties have been less than aggressive," in collecting back taxes from mobile-home owners, said Allen Hutto, general counsel for the Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina.
But Tim Winslow, who handles legal and legislative affairs for the S.C. Association of Counties, said by asking county councils to allow back taxes to be waived in some cases opened the door to other types of requests.
"This would treat manufactured houses differently than any other property in South Carolina," he said.
"We're just concerned with where that leads," he said.
