Developers planning Cheddar's Casual Cafe for Augusta

The owners of the area’s Captain D’s restaurants are a month away from breaking ground on a Cheddar’s Casual Café.

Macon-based C&P Restaurant Co. last year opened a Cheddar’s in the Savannah area. Their restaurant on Walton Way Extension would be its fifth in Georgia.

Mike Chumbley, C&P’s chief operating officer, said this morning the 8,200 square foot restaurant would like open in October.

Construction should begin in late May, he said. The restaurant will be situated between the water tower and the new Queensborough National Bank and Trust branch.

Mr. Chumbley said a Cheddar’s seats about 280 people. It will have more than 120 employees.

He said the corporation has been searching for years for the right lot to build a Cheddar’s. The company is going to buy 1.93 acres on Walton Way Extension, a deal brokered by Augusta development company Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial.

Mr. Chumbley and his partner, Allen Peake, a state congressman, have the franchise rights to Georgia and part of the Florida panhandle. They started their first Cheddar’s in Warner Robbins 10 years ago.

They also have locations in Columbus and Macon.

C&P Restaurant Co. runs the four Captain D’s restaurants in the Augusta area.
