COLUMBIA -- Sen. Greg Ryberg is filing legislations which would prevent someone from holding elected office in South Carolina if his property taxes are unpaid.
The Aiken Republican said received a list from the Department of Revenue that indicates 12 South Carolina House members have not filed taxes for one or more years from 2000-2007.
Sen. Phil Leventis, D-Sumter, said he'd oppose the legislation unless the names were revealed.
"I don't have a list," said Ryberg. "But I do know this: That when I asked a question, whether or not there was an obligation owed in taxes of Senate members and of House members, I got this answer. The Department of Revenue reported that its records showed no filing, no filing, at all for 12 House members in one or more years between the years 1999 and 2007."
