Fifth Street Bridge travel restricted

Drivers will not be able to access U.S. Highway 1 in North Augusta from the Fifth Street Bridge for the next several months.

Construction began today and is tentatively planned until August.

Crews will be improving the interchange at that location to add on and off ramps for drivers to travel both into Augusta and Aiken County from the Fifth Street Bridge, according to Jeff Terry, of the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Aiken office.

There will also be periodic lane closures for drivers on U.S. Highway 1 as they improve a small bridge over the roadway in that area.

Mr. Terry said Highway 1 would not be closed during the construction.
