Man's body found in house destroyed by fire

The body of a man was found in the rubble of a house destroyed by fire earlier tonight.

Richmond County Fire Lt. Carlton Bradley said the man's body was found around 9:45 p.m. in the ashes of a home located at 1748 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Neighbors reported the fire around 6:45 p.m.

The man who lived there, Charles Gordon, had been seen walking around the neighborhood earlier in the day, said Roosevelt Slaughter, a friend of Mr. Gordon's. Mr. Slaughter said the elderly man, known as Grey Beard, was a quiet man that lived alone.

A cause of the fire has not been determined, Lt. Bradley said. The body will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta, but it may be weeks before the body can be identified, he said.
