GreenJackets prepare for opener

Area baseball fans hoping to catch a glimpse of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. are gobbling up tickets to Thursday’s Augusta GreenJackets home opener.

“We’re not sold out yet,” GreenJackets general manager Nick Brown said Wednesday afternoon. “We were able to release some extra tickets that were allotted to the Savannah team. But they’re going fast.”

Brown said all box seats and reserved seating tickets are already sold out, but some general admission tickets are still available. The 7:35 p.m. game will mark the first home game of the season for the GreenJackets, and their first time back in Lake Olmstead Stadium since the team won last year’s South Atlantic League championship in September.

Ripken, representing the team’s ownership, Ripken Baseball Group, will present the league trophy to Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and will throw out the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Game time is scheduled for 7:35.
