Palmer hits opening tee shot

The 73rd Masters Tournament is officially under way.

Honorary starter Arnold Palmer hit the ceremonial first tee shot right down the fairway to the delight of patrons.

"No one has meant more to the game of golf," Augusta National and Masters Chairman Billy Payne said in introducing the four-time champion.

Palmer quipped: "Mr. Chairman, only one thing: I wanted fog." That was in reference to last year's tee shot, when heavy fog made it hard to see.

Afterwards, Palmer said it was still a thrill to be at Augusta National.

"What can you say," he said. "I made contact."

When asked if he would welcome Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus to next year's ceremony, Palmer was less certain.

"It's up to the chairman," he said. "I'll listen."
