Police say gang initiation threat just rumor

There is nothing to suggest that rumors circulating about a gang initiation to take place at Wal-Mart are credible, sheriff’s Sgt. Calvin Chew said this afternoon.

Calls have been coming into the sheriff’s office, but the hoax dates back to 2005 and is similar to the myth about gangs driving around with their headlights off, he said. If anyone receives an e-mail or text message related to this, they are asked to call the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1080 so investigators can track down their origin.

“It’s a whole bunch of rumors going around,” Sgt. Chew said. “The problem is you can never be too cautious.”
