Graniteville sewer line breaks

A sewer line failure today resulted in the discharge of untreated sewage in the Avondale Mills system near Ascauga Lake Road in Graniteville, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said in a news release.

An unknown amount of sewage overflowed into Horse Creek at Ascauga Lake Road. Avondale Mills has responded to the spill and has begun cleanup activities, the department said. A contractor has been hired by Avondale Mills to repair the break and clean up spilled sewage.

Sewer system overflows can occur whenever a sewer collection line is damaged, becomes clogged or surcharges because of heavy rains.

The public is advised to avoid contact with waters around and downstream of the overflow, the department said. Those includes Horse Creek and Langley Pond.
