FBI seeking fugitive suspected in 2008 shootout with policeman

The FBI issued a warrant today for a man charged in an altercation with an off-duty police officer in the West Lake subdivision last year.

Bobby Lee Roberson, 42, of Hephzibah, is wanted for aggravated assault of a police officer, robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to statement released by the FBI.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

In February 2008, an off-duty Medical College of Georgia police officer said he found a man, later identified as Mr. Roberson, in his vehicle. The policeman said he fired his weapon at the man, but he got away.

There are warrants out for Mr. Roberson’s arrest in Richmond and Columbia counties. Authorities believe he could be living in Georgia or South Carolina.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Mr. Roberson is described as black man, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 185 pounds. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact the Augusta FBI Office at (706) 722-3702 or (404) 679-9000.
