Controlled burn set near dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a controlled burn today involving about 105 acres just below Thurmond Dam on the Georgia side.

Columbia County Emergency Services Director said federal authorities notified the county and the Georgia Forestry office about the burn, which is a wildlife habitat enhancement project conducted periodically on many public lands.

The periodic burning also eliminates built up leaves and pine straw on the forest floor, making the tracts of timber less susceptible to forest fires.
