John Thomas was officially named director at tonight's city council meeting.

Thomas, who has served as the City of Clinton, S.C., director of public safety since 2005, felt that moving to North Augusta would benefit his career.

He will be responsible for 52 officers and 18 civilian personnel, said City Administrator Sam Bennett. He oversaw about 50 employees in Clinton, Thomas said.

Bennett, who came to work in North Augusta in 2007, formerly worked for Clinton as their city manager. He said he approached Thomas to help him with the selection process of finding a new director, but that in September Thomas decided he would apply for the job.

The final decision was in the hands of Mayor Lark Jones, councilman Jimmy Adams and councilwoman Carolyn Baggott.

Bennett chose to exclude himself from the decision process to avoid appearing biased, he said.

The first duty as director will be to get to know his employees and listen to them, Thomas said.

“We just love the community and the charm that’s here,” he said. “The people have been very receptive and very open and honest and couldn’t be more accommodating. My wife loves it, I love it and we’re ready to embrace change.”
