Proposed coliseum panel change not popular with chairman

State Sen. Ed Tarver’s proposal to reform the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority doesn’t sit well with its Chairman Richard Isdell.

Mr. Isdell said today it would reduce the authority to seven members – three appointed by one super-district Augusta commissioner, three by the other super-district commissioner and the seventh by the commission as a whole.

Mr. Isdell said if three and three were appointed by Don Grantham and J.R. Hatney, that would likely lead to a tie on controversial votes, with the seventh member deciding the issue every time.

“I think it’s crazy,” Mr. Isdell said.

The bill would also bar current board members from serving on the new board, he said, which would make everyone on the authority appear equally to blame for its past troubles.
