North Augusta nightclubs closed

Two private after-hour bars in North Augusta, The Spot and The Shack, have been shut down by the county’s building inspector for code violations.

The two nightclubs, which were closed last week, have been a source of problems for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, with deputies frequently going on service calls to the clubs because of complaints, according to the department.

In the past four years, sheriff’s deputies have responded to 53 service calls to The Shack, 38 of those after 2 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.

At The Spot, deputies have responded to 121 calls, 98 of which were after 2 a.m., and since December, the after-hours bar has been the site of two shootings that injured four people, the sheriff's office said today.

On Tuesday night the Aiken County Council approved on second reading an ordinance that would require bars in the county to close by 2 a.m. The council will consider final approval of the bill at its next meeting.
