Arrest made following I-20 chase

A pursuit that spanned three counties on Interstate 20 this afternoon after a bank robbery ended with the arrest of a 61-year-old Lithonia, Ga. man.

Alex Rodger III has been charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office news release. Mr. Rodger was stopped at a roadblock about 4:40 p.m. near the Cedar Rock Road overpass in McDuffie County, said McDuffie County sheriff’s Maj. Ronnie Williamson.

The chase began in Richmond County as authorities pursued a suspect in a 3:30 p.m. armed robbery of a Bank of America branch on Washington Road.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Scott Gay said the chase reached speeds of only 45 to 50 mph. As many as 30 patrol cars and a helicopter were involved, and traffic was backed up in the area.

“It makes you feel good to know we have such a cooperative effort when something like this happens,” Maj. Williamson said.

Lt. Gay said officers lost sight of the suspect, but he was later spotted on I-20 in McDuffie County. He said cash and a semi-automatic gun were recovered from the vehicle.

Maj. Williamson said it was the second time in a year that a suspect in a Richmond County bank robbery has been caught in a chase in McDuffie County.
