A Columbia County elementary school educator was named a finalist for state Teacher of the Year today.

Michele Rigsby, a fourth-grade teacher at Bel Air Elementary School, will be among nine other educators vying for the 2010 title.

During the next several weeks, a panel of judges will observe and interview each finalist at their schools. The finalists must also give a speech during a March 23 luncheon, according to a press release from the state Department of Education.

The winner will be named at a May 15 banquet at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. The state winner will then be entered into the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Teacher of the Year winners travel throughout the state and nation serving as teaching ambassadors, according to the press release.

The last Columbia County Teacher of the Year to make it on the list of state finalists was Greenbrier Middle School teacher Shaun Owen in 2004.
