Two residences in downtown Augusta were damaged by fire tonight, but officials at the scene said there were no injuries.

The blaze was reported shortly after 8 p.m. at a two-story home in the 300 block of Ellis Street. That structure sustained major fire and smoke damage to its top floor. A next-door home about 10 feet away also had some of its siding melted from the fire.

Several fire trucks have responded to the area, and the fire has been extinguished.

A cause isn't yet known.
