The New Ellenton man police say robbed a Martinez Walgreens store on Wednesday was caught early this morning in Sumter, S.C.
Police arrested Nathan James Key, 29, of the 700 block of Woodland Drive, while he was receiving treatment at a Sumter medical facility, Columbia County sheriffs Capt. Steve Morris said.
Police said Mr. Key approached the pharmacy of the Walgreens on Washington Road at Bobby Jones Expressway about 5:30 a.m. and asked a pharmacist where the bathroom was. She said when Mr. Key came out of the bathroom she noticed his wrist had been cut, according to a sheriffs office incident report.
The pharmacist said Mr. Key then pulled out a bag and demanded she fill it with Oxycontin. When she questioned Mr. Key, the pharmacist said he opened his jacket and showed her the butt of a handgun. Mr. Key took an undisclosed amount of the medication and ran from the store.
The New Ellenton Police Department has active warrants for Mr. Keys arrest in connection with a domestic violence incident that occurred prior to the robbery.
Capt. Morris said Mr. Key was scheduled to be transferred to the Aiken County Detention Center this afternoon.
