Columbia County gets year's first rabies case

A Columbia County family was advised to acquire additional rabies shots for their pet after a raccoon killed near Harlem last week tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was found on Green Plantation Road near Harlem, and is the first case of rabies in the county in 2009, said Animal Care & Control Manager Linda Fulmer.

“Luckily the dog at the residence had a current rabies vaccination,” she said, adding that additional booster shots were recommended as a precaution.

Columbia County documented 12 cases of rabies during 2008, the most recorded in recent memory.
