GBI won't release shooting video until investigation completed

Video shot from the dashboard of sheriff’s deputies’ patrol cars recorded the shooting of an Augusta man Sunday afternoon, but the video isn’t being released publicly.

GBI Special Agent Gary Nicholson said this morning that the video is considered evidence in the investigation of the deputies to determine if they were justified in the shooting of Justin Leonard Elmore.

Because it is considered evidence, it won’t be released until after the investigation is completed, he said.

On Monday, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said the video appears to show that his officers, Jose Rivera Ortiz and Michael Hodge, acted appropriately in shooting a man who tried to ram Deputy Ortiz with his SUV.
