Tree falls, halts traffic, knocks out power along Walton Way

Power was knocked out to more than 200 houses near Walton Way tonight when a large sweet gum tree fell across the road and into power lines near Malvern Drive, closing Walton Way between Malvern and Oberlin Drive.

Richmond County Sheriff's Deputy Craig Pryor said a woman driving down Walton Way about 7 p.m. saw it starting to fall.

Police said they are not sure what caused the accident and speculated drenching weekend rains could have softened the soil holding the roots, or today's high winds could have pushed it over.
