Muhannak wins Breeders' Cup Marathon, gives Europe first

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Muhannak charged to the lead in mid-stretch and held off a big late run by Church Service to win the inaugural $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon by a head at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Patrick Smullen, Muhannak covered 1½ miles on the new synthetic surface in 2:28.24 on Saturday and paid $26.80, $10.80 and $6.20.

Church Service returned $9.60 and $6.80, while Big Booster was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $6.80 to show.

Ireland-bred Muhannak gave Europe its first victory on the second day of the Breeders' Cup season-ending championships.

It was the first Breeders' Cup win for Smullen and trainer Ralph Beckett.



Savannah River Site resumes normal activity

A suspicious item was discovered Wednesday afternoon at the Savannah River National Laboratory which prompted emergency responseactivities.
