Ex-principal freed on bond

A 67-year-old former Aiken County school administrator arrested Tuesday by state agents on sexual assault charges was freed on $25,000 bond this afternoon.

Stephen Eubanks of the 300 block of Belair Road in North Augusta faces charges of lewd act upon a child under the age of 16, exposing of private parts, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and one count of enticing children from school. The judge set bond at $5,000 for each charge.

Agents with the State Law Enforcement Division said their investigation began on Sept. 19 at the request of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

According to SLED, the incidents occurred between 1975 and 1977 and involved a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, who were students at North Augusta High School and Paul Knox Junior High School, now Paul Knox Middle School.

According to Augusta Chronicle archives, Mr. Eubanks was an assistant principal at the high school and later principal at the junior high school.
