University of Georgia examines campus alert system flaws

ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia officials are investigating a 13-minute delay in the school's automated emergency notification system when the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Clarke County Aug. 26.

The UGAAlert system is designed to send students and employees text messages, e-mails and automated phone calls when there is a campus-wide threat that could harm them, such as a natural disaster or gunman rampage. Nearly 50,000 people are connected to the system.

Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness director Steve Harris says the delay was caused by a slow-responding computer system owned by a private vendor and a malfunctioning weather radio at the UGA Police Department.

Police have ordered a new weather radio.



Savannah River Site resumes normal activity

A suspicious item was discovered Wednesday afternoon at the Savannah River National Laboratory which prompted emergency responseactivities.
