Man killed in McDuffie County wreck

A man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck this afternoon on a rain-soaked highway in McDuffie County, the second fatal crash there in as many days.

Today’s wreck occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Georgia Highway 278 just outside of Thomson. Authorities said a Dodge Dakota pickup apparently hydroplaned and crossed the centerline into the path of a GMC Yukon. The driver of the Yukon, Terrie Gribanow, attempted to avoid the accident by swerving off the road, but the vehicles collided on the shoulder of the roadway, sending both cars careening to the other side of the road, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Mike Callaway.

Mrs. Gribanow, who works as a media specialist at Dearing Elementary School in McDuffie County, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and was listed in fair condition. Two children in the Yukon were not injured. Trooper Callaway said the man who died at the scene was ejected from the Dodge. Another person in the pickup, who wasn’t identified pending family notification of the deceased, also was taken to MCG in good condition. Authorities were unsure who was driving the truck.

Also Tuesday, a 25-year-old McDuffie County man died from injuries sustained when the Jeep he was driving flipped on Ridge Road Monday afternoon, authorities said. The victim was identified as Nicholas Wiley, of Ridge Road, Thomson.
