Clemons is charged with murder among other charges in slaying of McDuffie County woman near Dearing

THOMSON, Ga. – Local and state authorities who have been investigating the shooting death of a woman at her home near Dearing last week officially filed a murder warrant against the victim’s brother-in-law on Monday.


Dennis Clemons, 63, of the 400 block of First Street, Thomson, was charged Monday afternoon with the murder of 53-year-old Shirley Ann Hunt, according to Gary Nicholson, special agent in-charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 7 Office in Thomson.

In addition to the murder warrant, Mr. Clemons also is charged with possession of weapon during the commission of a crime, Agent Nicholson said. That charge also was levied against him on Monday.

Mr. Clemons, who was taken into custody at his residence early last Friday, was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ms. Hunt, whose funeral services are slated for Tuesday, was shot “several times” Thursday night, according to McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall.

The suspect is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center in Appling. He now awaits a hearing before a magistrate judge related to the new criminal charges against him.

The case remains under investigation by the GBI and McDuffie County Sheriff’s Department.
