Boy, 13, dies after youth football league practice

SNELLVILLE, Ga. - A 13-year-old died after about two hours of conditioning for the upcoming Gwinnett Football League season.

Ted Bailey, chief investigator for the county medical examiner, says Jacheem Xavier died at 9:45 p.m. Monday at Eastside Medical Center. Bailey says results of tests to determine the cause could take 12 weeks, but "there's no evidence it's a heat-related death."

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound eighth-grader was with teammates at Shiloh High School. Youth league president Erik Richards said he began vomiting shortly after a two-hour workout that began at 7 p.m. and then lost consciousness.

Richards says it is the first on-field death in his 19 years with the league.
