Woman dies in fiery crash

Authorities recovered a woman’s body from a fiery single-vehicle accident on Story Mill Road about two miles from Fulcher Road this morning.

The accident occurred at about 3 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, the driver left the roadway and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten. The vehicle landed on top of the driver and caught fire.

“The fire broke out and the victim was burned beyond recognition,” the coroner said.

The driver’s body has been sent to the Augusta State Crime Lab for an autopsy and identification based on her dental records, Mr. Tuten said.

Authorities expect to have an identity Wednesday morning.
