Police say charges pending in Evans pedestrian fatality

Columbia County authorities said today an Evans man could face charges after his vehicle struck and killed a woman walking with her husband along Mulliken Road on Wednesday night.

Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said this morning that charges were pending against Brandon Wise, 24, in the death of Christian Giles, also 24, a Richmond County elementary school teacher.

Mrs. Giles, of Sawbuck Way, was walking along the south shoulder of Mullikin Road at about 9 p.m. with her husband and two dogs when she was struck by Mr. Wise’s Ford Expedition, said Capt. Morris. The impact knocked her 70 feet.

Mr. Wise told police he was traveling south on Mullikin Road and didn’t see Mrs. Giles until it was too late to avoid striking her, Capt. Morris said.

Mrs. Giles, a John Milledge Elementary School teacher, was pronounced dead at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

An autopsy was planned this morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta.
