Atlanta police kill burglary suspect in shootout

ATLANTA - Authorities say two Atlanta police officers have been wounded and a burglary suspect killed in a shootout in southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington says the officers do not have life threatening injuries. Grady Hospital officials say one officer was shot in the neck and the other was bruised on his chest when a bullet struck his bulletproof vest.

Pennington said the officers were assigned to a unit aimed at reducing burglaries in the Atlanta neighborhood. The officers approached three burglary suspects in front of a home, and one of the suspects started firing an automatic weapon at them.

The officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects.

Pennington declined to release the names of the officers and the suspects.
