Fallen tree closes Stevens Creek Road

A Columbia County roads and bridges crew is removing a tree from Stevens Creek Road and it is likely to be closed until 11 a.m.

This morning around 7 a.m., a Roads & Bridges crew was traveling on Stevens Creek Road just past the bridge on the way to a job when a huge pine tree fell across the road near Ironwood and Prestwick, almost hitting their vehicles.

According to a statement from county officials, the tree brought down power lines and the crew saw a fire ball and sparks.

A civilian’s vehicle had just passed by seconds before the tree fell. The crew quickly moved their vehicles out of the area and contacted the Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Power Company.

Stevens Creek Road had to be closed while Georgia Power removed the line off the tree.
