Augusta will be at a slight risk for severe weather, but Atlanta risk is higher.
Storms are expected to reach the metro Atlanta area later this morning and spread into central Georgia by the afternoon, according to Pam Tucker, Columbia County's director of emergency services.
The thunderstorms have the potential for large hail and frequent lightening. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk for severe thunderstorms.
The Augusta-area, however, is looking at only about a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms that are expected to develop this afternoon.
"Right now the chance is very slim (for severe weather)," said David Schuetrum, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia.
Meteorologists are currently re-evaluating models for Augusta to determine the possibility for stronger storms.
