Latest: Some flooding across region

The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for much of east central Georgia and western South Carolina as heavy rains soaked the region this morning.

Crews have temporarily closed a portion of Alexander Drive due to flooding from this morning's heavy rains. A signed detour will be in place to direct drivers using Riverwatch Parkway, Claussen Road and Washington Road, according to a Georgia Department of Transportation press release.

There are about 100 power outages in the Aiken area, according to South Carolina Electric and Gas. Slight flooding at Whiskey Road near the Green Boundary Club and Hopelands Gardens slowed traffic through the area.

Slow-draining areas around Medical College of Georgia caused water to pond on Laney-Walker Boulevard and Harper Street, prompting public safety officers at the school to shut the roads down for about 30 to 45 minutes, spokeswoman Toni Baker said. There was no apparent damage to buildings, however, she said.

In Columbia County rainfall varied from 0.4 inches to 3.7 inches, emergency officials said.  Ditches were overflowing on Point Comfort Drive and there was also street flooding reported at Westlake Drive at Lost Tree Lane.  Both areas where higher amounts of rainfall occurred.
