Faces of Survival: Karen Marks

Cancer survivor Karen Marks

FAMILY: Husband, Leo

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: April 2010; double mastectomy with reconstruction, six chemotherapy treatments and one year of Herceptin treatments

HER STORY: Marks, 52, said an ultrasound was necessary to discover her cancer because she has very dense breast tissue. Her treatment ended in May but a recent infection from the reconstructive surgery caused her to have another surgery.

During her bout with cancer, Marks began watercolor painting and has turned a special painting into breast cancer awareness note cards. Portions of the sales help breast cancer research at Georgia Health Sciences University.

HER ADVICE: “Keep a positive attitude; fight like a girl,” Marks said. “Never give up and try to surround yourself with loving friends and family.”
